How do you know that a speech is “good” or “bad?” For this discussion, search YouTube for examples of student Informative Speech presentations. Find one that you consider to be “good” and one that you consider to be “bad.” Now, come up with a standard for “good” and a standard for “bad” Post both speeches. What does that mean? What makes the speech a good one? What makes the speech a bad one? To analyze each speech, you can use the following information.
The Specific Purpose
The Thesis Statement/Central Idea
The Speech Structure
The Introduction (attention getter, credibility statement, preview)
Main Points, sub points, balanced and organized. Easy to follow
The Conclusion (summarized, gave final statement)
The Transitions (from main point to main point and sub point to sub point)
The Content
Supporting material
Research, Source Citations (verbal and non-verbal)
The Delivery
Verbal
vocal variety
pronunciation/mispronunciation
vocal fillers (ums and uhs)
pauses, rate/pace
Non-Verbal
appearance
gestures
poise
posture
eye contact
movement
Use your findings to create an original post about each speech. Define your standard of what constitutes “good” or effective and what constitutes “bad” or ineffective. What made one effective while the other bombed? Could you see who was prepared and rehearsed and who didn’t put much thought into the presentation? How important is preparation and rehearsal? Draw on the textbook chapter readings on structure, content, and delivery to help you form your post. Be specific.
